Session Abstract – PMWC 2019 Silicon Valley
Session Synopsis: With the increase of DNA sequencing, we see a rise in data accumulation and a greater need for correlation with clinical information and patient reported outcomes. Unfortunately, most of that data is siloed. Recognizing that individuals should control their data and incentivizing them to contribute it to research requires a new paradigm. This session will focus on different approaches of secure data sharing via new, next generation technologies and trusted systems that also reward individuals to share their data.

Biography
Crane Harris is a business development professional with over 25 years of experience on both the “buy” and “sell” side, working with public and private, large and small, for profit and nonprofit enterprises. He currently serves as the Chief Business Officer for the San Diego Blood Bank, identifying and locking in alternative revenue streams to support the SDBB’s core mission. Crane spent the 13 years prior to joining SDBB as Director of Business Development for Illumina, closing many strategic business collaborations, negotiating supply contracts, and supporting the development and launch of new products. He’s received the Values Award, the Pillar Award and the President’s Club awards from Illumina. Prior to Illumina, Crane held leadership positions at La Jolla Pharmaceuticals, Pharmacia/Monsanto Co., and the Environmental Protection Agency (EPA). Crane received his B.A. in Psychology from Vanderbilt University and his M.B.A. at the Darden Business School at the University of Virginia.

Biography
Dawn Barry is an esteemed genomics thought leader and veteran of the San Diego biotech industry. She spent twelve years at Illumina, Inc., including serving as the vice president of Applied Genomics and leading pioneering teams in preemptive health screening, nutrition security, and transplant diagnostics. Dawn was a co-founder of the Illumina Understand Your Genome(R) symposium, which is now owned by Genome Medical. From there, Dawn embarked on a new journey to reshape health research and engage individuals to advance science via their health data. She co-founded LunaDNA, a community-owned health and DNA data platform and currently serves as the president of LunaPBC, a Public Benefit Corporation who manages the LunaDNA platform.

Biography
Bastian Greshake Tzovaras is the Director of Research at Open Humans, a non-profit organization that provides an open participatory science ecosystem. His work is at the intersection of citizen science, the quantified self and traditional research. With Open Humans he brings together individuals around sharing and re-using their personal data to perform new kinds of research across disciplines. Before joining Open Humans, Bastian founded the crowdsourced personal genomics data repository openSNP which puts genomes into the public domain and did a PhD in Bioinformatics.

Biography
Jason Bobe directs the Resilience Project, an effort to learn how some people are able avoid disease despite having significant risk factors. He is primarily concerned with producing research efforts that people actually want to join. He believes we’ll never solve our health challenges unless we figure out how to make research a common cultural activity. So, he works on prototyping collaborative and participatory models of biomedical research and citizen science. With a focus on (a) greatly expanding the rates of participation in organized health research, (b) broadening the types of contributions participants in research are able to make, (c) promoting discovery & engagement through participant-centered research design, and (d) building research networks and communities of practice around emerging technologies. He is Associate Professor and Director of Democratized Health Innovation at the Institute for Next Generation Healthcare (INGH) at the Mount Sinai School of Medicine. He is co-founder of DIYbio.org, OpenHumans.org, and PersonalGenomes.org.

Biography
Dr. Dalton is also the past President, CEO & Center Director of the Moffitt Cancer Center. In 2014, the Moffitt Cancer Center and the James Cancer Center at the Ohio State University, founded the cancer center alliance called ORIEN, Oncology Research Information and Exchange Network, with the goal of accelerating cancer research by sharing information and promoting collaborative learning through partnerships. ORIEN is now comprised of seventeen cancer centers in the nation and has formed strategic partnerships with pharmaceutical companies for research and matching patients to clinical trials. Dr. Dalton’s research interests include molecular mechanisms of drug resistance and developing information systems to enhance learning and evidence-based decision making. He has over 200 publications, and has numerous patents in the fields of drug discovery and computer/information networking.
