Session Abstract – PMWC 2018 Silicon Valley

Session Synopsis: This session will cover how precision medicine overlays into the issue of cost-effective clinical care. The cost of medical care remains a timely topic. Different stakeholders (payers, PHARMA, the government) will engage in a lively discussion on issues related to cost of care, political aspects of care delivery, and how precision medicine applies and can be defined as getting the “right therapy to the right patient at the right time….at the right price.”

Biography

Kevin Knopf is a Health Economist and Health Services researcher as well as a practicing oncologist and site lead for oncology for Sutter Health in San Francisco. His research focuses on large scale data analytics (“big data”), patterns and quality of care in oncology, health disparities in cancer screening, diagnosis, and treatment, and cost-effectiveness in cancer care. He started his research career in the Health Economics and Outcomes Research Branch at the NCI, and the Prostate Cancer Outcomes Study. He is an editor at Value Based Cancer Care and the Journal of Community Oncology. He is also Vice President of the nonprofit Rooms that Rock 4 Chemo. He has clinical faculty positions at Dartmouth Medical School and the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. Dr. Knopf holds degrees from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the University of California, San Francisco School of Medicine. He completed his clinical training at Northwestern Medical School, the Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, and the National Cancer Institute.

Biography

Scott Patterson, PhD, is Vice President, Biomarker Sciences in the R&D organization at Gilead Sciences, Inc, where he is responsible for development and implementation of biomarker and diagnostic strategies across all the company’s therapeutic areas. Previously, he was Executive Director, Medical Sciences at Amgen, Inc, where he established the company’s biomarker strategy and led the In Vitro Diagnostics Group from its inception. Prior to Amgen, Dr. Patterson was Vice President, Proteomics at Celera Genomics. Earlier in his career, he held research appointments at Amgen and at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory, New York. Dr. Patterson received BSc and PhD degrees from The University of Queensland in Australia.

Biography

Prior to serving on the Board of Equalization, Ma was elected to the California State Assemblywoman from 2006-2012. She was the first Asian American woman to become Speaker pro Tempore of the State Assembly. In the Assembly, Ma passed laws to protect consumers, help working families pay their bills prevent the spread of Hepatitis B, increase access to quality healthcare, and provide equal rights for all Californians. Ma previously served as a San Francisco Supervisor. Prior to her career in public service, Ma worked as an accountant for Ernst & Young, before leaving to start her own accounting practice. Ma has been licensed in California as a Certified Public Account (CPA) since 1992.

Biography

Dr. Roy Beveridge is Humana’s Senior Vice President and Chief Medical Officer, where he is responsible for developing and implementing the company’s clinical strategy and advancing its integrated care delivery model. He is known for creating collaborative environments among physician communities and providing thought leadership, publishing extensively in the fields of medical oncology, quality design, ethics, and population health. Previously, Dr. Beveridge served as Chief Medical Officer for McKesson Specialty Health and as Executive VP and Chief Medical Officer for US Oncology. He practiced for more than 20 years in medical oncology and stem cell transplant in northern Virginia.

Biography

Lee Newcomer’s career with UnitedHealth Group started in 1991 as the CMO with responsibilities for clinical services, Medicare and Medicaid. He focused his later work on the development of performance measures and incentives for the improvement of clinical care until 2001. He returned in 2006 to lead a pilot initiative combining clinical, financial and program management experts to improve the quality and affordability of cancer care. Prior to his work at UnitedHealth Group, Dr. Newcomer practiced medical oncology in Minneapolis and Tulsa, Oklahoma. He served as the Medical Director for Cigna Healthcare, in Kansas City and he was a founding executive of Vivius, a consumer directed venture that allowed consumers to create their own personalized health plans. He is a former Chairman of Park Nicollet Health Services (HealthPartners). Dr. Newcomer holds a BA degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University, a MD degree from the University of Nebraska College Of Medicine and a Masters of Health Administration from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. His clinical training included an internal medicine residency at the University of Nebraska Medical Center and a medical oncology fellowship at the Yale University School of Medicine.

Biography

Joan Kim is the Chief Business Officer at NAVICAN, an Intermountain Healthcare company providing precision cancer care solutions and services. Joan leads NAVICAN’s market partnerships and strategic marketing efforts, as well as the clinical services team. The key priority for Joan is the challenge of demonstrating and articulating the impact of precision medicine on the total cost of care; improvements in clinical outcomes is table stakes. Prior to joining NAVICAN, Joan was a partner and Managing Director at L.E.K. Consulting, serving as head of the Healthcare Services practice. Joan received her Bachelors and Masters degrees in Biological Sciences from Stanford University.
