Speaker Profile

Ph.D., Project Scientist, Department of Pathology & Laboratory Medicine, University of California at Davis
Biography

Dr. Farzad fereidouni is a project scientist at University of California at Davis, in the department of Pathology and Laboratory Medicine. He is an experienced physicist with extensive expertise in the development of experimental setups and methodologies for industrial and biomedical imaging applications. He has obtained his Msc from Shahid Beheshti University, where he developed a diode-pumped solid-state Nd:YAG laser. Next, he moved into imaging field, working on approaches to 3D scanning using triangulation and structured illumination. He obtained his Ph.D. in 2013 from Utrecht University where he developed a novel detection hardware and analysis algorithms for spectrally resolved lifetime imaging system. As a Postdoc at Delft university he focused on development and validation of a super-resolution microscope employing structured illumination techniques. Since 2014, he has been involved in the design and development of microscopy with UV surface excitation (MUSE) that promises to have a truly significant impact on current pathology practice.

Presentation Title and Company Description

Clinical & Research Tools Showcase: MUSE Microscopy: Non-destructive, Slide-free, Cool
Traditional histopathology—slow, expensive, destructive and not always available—can be replaced by newly developed MUSE (microscopy with UV-surface excitation). MUSE provides diagnostic-quality full-color images from unsectioned tissue within minutes. Sample-preserving MUSE imaging of small unfixed, biopsy specimens can increase yield and diagnostic speed and facilitate affordable precision medicine.
