Session Synopsis: Breaking down barriers to mobile health and integrating virtual services as a tool within the primary care clinic are new trends that are quickly impacting our lives and our practices. Advantages include, but are not limited to, cost reduction, clinical efficacy, care for the elderly, and access to digital health data that patients and consumers can use to improve their health.

Biography

Ida Sim, MD, PhD is a primary care physician, informatics researcher, and entrepreneur. She is Co-Founder of Open mHealth, a non-profit organization that is breaking down barriers to mobile health data integration through open APIs and open source tools. She also a Professor of Medicine at the University of California, San Francisco, where she co-directs Biomedical Informatics at UCSF’s Clinical and Translational Sciences Institute. Dr. Sim’s research focuses on data sharing for clinical research and mobile health, and on bringing computational technology to frontline clinical care. Dr. Sim is also a co-investigator with the Mobile Data to Knowledge NIH Center of Excellence.

Biography

Sumbul Ahmad Desai, MD currently serves as Vice Chair, Department of Medicine, Strategy and Innovation at Stanford Hospital and Clinics (SHC) where she is responsible for the product strategy, design and deployment of Stanford’s virtual care and digital offerings. Dr. Desai also leads Stanford Hospital’s Strategy and Innovation group which is responsible for organizational strategy and development of Stanford Hospital and Clinics’ innovation efforts. In conjunction with this role Dr. Desai continues to serve on faculty as Clinical Assistant Professor with Stanford University’s School of Medicine (SOM) in the Department of Medicine. Dr. Desai speaks regularly on Innovation in Healthcare and is quickly becoming a leader in the space. Along with her work at the hospital, Dr. Desai is also focused on developing a research program that focuses on how to leverage technology to improve patient experience and coordination of care. She focuses on how both patients and providers think about the integration of technology into healthcare and how these advances will impact our lives. Prior to entering the medical field, Dr. Desai spent the first several years of her career at The Walt Disney Company in Strategy and Business Development. She began her tenure at Disney on the editorial side at ABC News and then moved into a business leadership role in Strategy focused on the Studio business.
