Session Abstract – PMWC 2017 Silicon Valley

Session Synopsis: Precision medicine is empowered by access to diverse data, patients, and provider networks. This session will describe the role of health systems as translational research partners that can drive: 1) molecular discoveries; 2) provider and patient engagement through an interoperable platform; and 3) rapid translation of discoveries to clinical practice.

Biography

Walter (Buzz) Stewart joined Sutter in July, 2012 and oversees research at Sutter organized around Digital Health and Advanced Analytics, Precision Medicine, Clinical Trials, and Rapid Health System Learning. His personal interests span the unique role of health system research in transforming care through predictive analytics, population health management, and digital health. Prior to Sutter, Buzz founded the Geisinger Center for Health Research (2003-2012) as part of Geisinger’s decade long strategy to transform the delivery of health care. Previously, he was a faculty member at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health (1983-1995), was Vice President of Research and Development at AdvancePCS (1998-2002) and founded, managed, and successfully sold several start-ups. He has published more than 400 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters after receiving his PhD in Epidemiology from Johns Hopkins University, his MPH from UCLA, and his BS in Psychobiology from University of California, Riverside.

Biography

Dr. Liberman leads the teams responsible for designing and developing health care solutions and implementing the system-wide DNA and serum biobank. Prior to joining Sutter Health, Dr. Liberman was the Vice President, Research Operations, for the Center for Health Research at Geisinger Health System, where he directed the Center’s operations and developed research collaborations with clinical leaders in Neurosciences, Pediatrics, and Pulmonology. Dr. Liberman was the Vice President of Strategic Research with CVS Health, the largest integrated pharmacy company in the United States and the market leader in mail order; retail clinics; and Medicare Part D prescription drug plans. Dr. Liberman’s research focused on evaluating pharmacy benefit management services, barriers to generic drug and mail-service pharmacy use, and the value of medication adherence. He received his PhD in Epidemiology, School of Hygiene and Public Health; Master of Health Science in Occupational & Environmental Epidemiology; and Bachelor of Arts in Natural Science – Public Health, all from The Johns Hopkins University, Baltimore, Maryland.
